For one hot week in July of 2008, Hiss Golden Messenger creeped America's Eastern seaboard in a broke-ass station wagon from the North Carolina Piedmont through Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City, arriving ultimately in the bucolic upstate village of Bovina, New York—population 664—for the annual Hang Tender music festival alongside fellow travellers Endless Boogie, P.G. Six, Meg Baird, Michael Talbott, and others.
A scuzzy companion piece to HGM's Root Work, Plowed: Live in Bovina finds the core trio of M.C. Taylor, Scott Hirsch, and Terry Lonergan—with additional guitar help courtesy of Jonn Ollsin—haunting the spirit house of the soul. Considering the condition of most participants that summer—and what has come since—it's amazing that this even exists. Documented by Emily Hirsch on a handheld recorder. Edited and mastered by Scott Hirsch. Artwork and layout by Brendan Greaves.
